“Be the change you want to see in the world” Gandhi

The theme of this year’s Bealtaine Arts Festival was Altogether Now! Collectivism, Civic Engagement and Protest! Artist Maria Gasol specialises in portraiture and she encouraged Cumann Cairdeas to explore this theme and what those concepts mean to us individually.

The result is nine thought-provoking portraits. Each portrait represents an individual who has made a change to the world. The subjects range from Nelson Mandela to Kathrine Switzer, the first female to run the Boston Marathon. Maria encouraged the group to not only capture personality and likeness of an individual but to utilise figuration as a broader thematic device.

The paintings will be on display at the Post Office in Falcarragh from 1 June for two weeks. We hope you enjoy them.

Tiny Tunes will visit the Parent and Toddler Group on Thursday 25th May from 10.30am-11.30am. Parents’ night out to Lizzies Diner on Saturday 27th May at 7.30pm. Group will then take their annual summer break. We will see some of the children back in September for another year and we wish all the children going to pre-school the best of luck and hope that the parent and toddler group was a great steeping stone to the next chapter in their lives.

The Ozanum Centre has invited Cumann Cairdeas to a Bealtaine Tea Party on Thursday 25th May. Bus will be leaving the YARD at 10.45am. Tea/scones on arrival, a game of bingo, and a light lunch followed by music with Josie Cannon. Only €5 pp. to book call Pobail Le Chéile 074 9180111.

Maria’s Bealtaine Art Project continues on Tuesdays from 11.30am-1pm. The theme this year was All Together Now! Collectivism, civic engagement and protest! . Maria’s encouraged us to explore the concept of ‘people power’, civic engagement (and yes protest!), as well as the empathy that accompanies these human activities. There are some wonderful thought-provoking images emerging such as a painting depicting John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Famous Honeymoon Bed-in for peace as well as other paintings based on human rights activists. The next day trip will be to Oakfield Park on Tuesday 6th June. The group will then take their annual summer break.
