“Be the change you want to see in the world” Gandhi
The theme of this year’s Bealtaine Arts Festival was Altogether Now! Collectivism, Civic Engagement and Protest! Artist Maria Gasol specialises in portraiture and she encouraged Cumann Cairdeas to explore this theme and what those concepts mean to us individually.
The result is nine thought-provoking portraits. Each portrait represents an individual who has made a change to the world. The subjects range from Nelson Mandela to Kathrine Switzer, the first female to run the Boston Marathon. Maria encouraged the group to not only capture personality and likeness of an individual but to utilise figuration as a broader thematic device.
The paintings will be on display at the Post Office in Falcarragh from 1 June for two weeks. We hope you enjoy them.
